Movie Mondays and Premieres on KWOD

Mondays are often written off as uneventful by many people, even though there are plenty of ways to make it exciting. After all, TV's most successful show season after season is Monday Night Football. Why is it on Monday night? It's strategic programming to kick off the new week with excitement, brought to your living room by television. What can radio do to create a similar sense of euphoria to kick off the week? For KWOD, it was Movie Mondays.

Why Movie Monday Lasted So Long

The reason Movie Monday was such a popular feature on KWOD in the 80s and 90s had to do with the popularity of movies as well as a station event in which you could meet air talent. Part of what made Movie Monday a fun weekly event was it gave listeners a chance to win tickets over the phone and see a new film they could tell friends about. The theater experience was still big in the 90s and movies that tied in with the station's music made perfect sense.

KWOD showcased premieres and new releases that targeted the station's same youthful market. Many of these shows were presented at the former Century Theatres near Arden Fair and the Cinedome in Citrus Heights. The station had a relationship with Syufi Theatres set up by Promotion Director Bob Ryder in the 1980s. The idea was so successful, Program Director Alex Cosper and Promotion Director Rob Endsley kept it going in the 1990s.

Throughout the history of Movie Mondays, the film was usually introduced by a KWOD air staff member. It helped create a closer connection with listeners, especially those who won tickets regularly. The station gave away plenty of tickets over the air and at promotional events. But KWOD wasn't the only station giving away movie tickets. On one occasion, Alex Cosper from KWOD and Mark S. Allen from KMAX TV Channel 31 introduced Mary Reilly together on February 21, 1996.
